Today he would very likely be called a talented all-rounder: Georg Spalatin was a polymath – he studied philosophy, law, theology, and many more subjects. The ordained priest also turned out to be a veritable diplomat and strategist of the Reformation. He mediated between Luther and Frederick the Wise, he saved the life of the Reformer while he was an outcast, and he put the doctrines of the Reformation into practice in Altenburg. The theme year “Reformation and Politics” will highlight the jack-of-all-trades, who made significant contributions to the success of more well-known Reformers.
