Since the church had played a significant role in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, the religious reawakening had a substantial effect on almost all aspects of life. The historical influence of the Reformation and its relevance has lasted until today: With his theses, Martin Luther had initiated a process of modernization that impacted not only the church but also the entire society. Owing to the Reformation freedom of conscience, co-determination, democracy and a free will have become the order of the day. Luther's work started the secularization of power, a modern legislation and a new concept of state.
