Professor Dr. h.c. Margot Käßmann is the Special Envoy of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) for the Anniversary of the Reformation 2017.
The former Council President of the EKD and long-time bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran national church in Hannover first taught social ethics and ecumenism as a guest professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum.
The native of Marburg has her theological roots in the ‘Ökumene der weltweiten Christenheit’, where she also received her PhD. As a 25 year old vicar, she was voted in as the youngest member of the Central Committee of the Ecumenical Council of the church. Between 1994 and 1999, she was General Secretary of the German Evangelical Church Day. As the first woman ever, Margot Käßmann was voted for the leading position in the EKD in October 2009. From 1999 to 2000, she was the regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran national church in Hannover, the church with the largest membership in the EKD. On April 27 2012, Käßmann took over her new office as ambassador for the anniversary of the Reformation.
