Is it not a wretched state of affairs and one to be regretted that the Devil accuses and condemns us in matters where he is far worse than we are? What is it to do with him that I have sinned? However, I have not sinned against him, but against God and His laws; for he has not given me the Law – it was given by God. So we say: “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned.” As we have God as our Father and the forgiveness of sins on account of Christ, the Devil has to leave us without condemnation because Christ has wiped the slate of our conscience clean (…). Original Sin cannot be banished by any law or punishment, even if the punishment were to be a thousand hells. On the contrary, God’s Grace alone can sweep this sin clean and both cleanse and renew nature.
