"500 Jahre Reformation" ("500 years of Reformation") connects important aspects of the anniversary. Luther is placed in the centre, as central figure, as the important giver of impulses and creator of the theses. At the same time, the Reformation anniversary in 2017 is highlighted. The event also reflects the Reformation's impact on the historical developments of the church, politics, culture and society.
The image is based on the probably most well-known portrait of Luther, painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1528. Its depiction as pixel graphics lends a modern shape to the historical figure, illustrating that the Reformation is a contemporary issue. The year "2017"; the symbol within the brand mark that is pointing furthest towards the future, receives a historical notion due to the use of a traditional font, whereas the core messages "Luther" and "500 Jahre Reformation" are conveyed by means of the clear lines of modern typography.
