It was an inspirational idea of Reformation to perceive a person's value as rooted only in his or her acknowledgement by God – independent from one's position in society, wealth or religious "achievements". This liberates people from the pressure to succeed, as well as from moral pressure. In the series "Luther Today" we ask celebrities: Is Luther's idea of religious freedom still important today?
Margot Käßmann: "Luther's reformatory insight is an encouragement for our life today"
In a world that is fixed on economy, it might be phrased like this: With God, the account of your life is already in the black." says Margot Käßmann future ambassador of the Reformation anniversary 2017.
Katrin Göring-Eckardt: "We should live and enjoy our freedom"
As Christians, we are free in our decisions and not subject to the constraints of this world. We are accountable to God alone and do not need an "intermediary" to defend us.
Imam Benjamin Idriz on the religious freedom of human beings
The revelation of the Qur'an, God's final word according to the Muslim faith, is about human beings. Therefore it is important to put human beings into the centre - and its freedom.
Monika Griefahn: "We must make an endeavour and no excuses"
For me, the difference between the Catholic and the Protestant church is this: We have no pope but must justify ourselves and be responsible before God.
Hermann Gröhe: "Freedom of religion and conscience is one of the most fundamental rights"
Separate, but based on partnership, and for a good reason: this is what I perceive to be the most apt description of the relationship between church and state in Germany.
Kerstin Griese: "Social Commitment is a Protestant trait"
The consequence of the freedom gained from the Reformation is not selfishness but the freedom to serve others.
