Today’s pilgrims crave tranquillity and are seeking to find themselves as well as the answers to life's existential questions. Luther’s theology is existential; he possessed an enquiring and searching mind. Despite the Protestant reformer’s occasional criticism of the ‘pilgrim circuit’ – Luther and pilgrimage are not as contradictory as one might initially expect.
